Diversity Guide
Before You Travel
Before travelling, check the latest entry requirements, visa or ESTA rules and official travel advice for the United States.
Immigration policies can change quickly. Always check the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website before travelling.
The US Department of State provides a directory of foreign embassies and consulates in the United States.
ESTA and Border Entry
Most visitors will require either a visa or an approved ESTA. Approval allows travel to the United States but does not guarantee entry, which is determined by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival.
US border authorities may search electronic devices in some circumstances. Visitors carrying sensitive personal, legal, journalistic or work-related information should review official guidance before travelling.
Healthcare and Travel Insurance
The United States does not provide free healthcare to visitors. Medical treatment can be extremely expensive, including emergency care, ambulance services and hospital treatment.
Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment, existing conditions and emergency repatriation is strongly recommended.
Medication
Bring enough medication for your trip and keep it in original labelled packaging. Carry copies of prescriptions where possible. Some medications available in other countries may be restricted in the United States.
Emergencies
For police, fire or ambulance emergencies, call 911.
For mental health crises, call or text 988.
Tipping Culture
Tipping is a normal part of service culture in the United States, and workers in hospitality, food service and transport often rely on tips as part of their income.
Typical tipping expectations include:
Restaurants: 18–25%
Bars: $1–2 per drink or 18–20%
Taxis and rideshares: 10–20%
Hotel staff and luggage assistance: small cash tips
Hairdressers, beauty services and delivery drivers: 15–20%
